Bird watching in and around Andaman’s capital city, Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), is an unparalleled experience. On this carefully curated 6-day expedition, we bypass the crowded tourist spots to explore an incredible array of pristine habitats, from dense tropical evergreen rainforests to rich mangroves and coastal wetlands. Because all these hotspots are within driving distance from the capital, you spend less time traveling and more time behind your lens, successfully targeting the region’s rarest endemic, resident, and migratory birds.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands float in splendid isolation in the Bay of Bengal. Once a continuous hill range extending from Myanmar to Indonesia, this picturesque, undulating archipelago of around 836 islands and islets is carpeted in dense, rain-fed evergreen forests.
This geographic isolation has turned our home into a world-class paradise of biological diversity:
8,400+ Fauna Species: A massive concentration of unique wildlife.
280 Avian Species: Representing 56 distinct families.
105 Endemic Species & Subspecies: Out of 142 endemic bird species found across the entire Indian subcontinent, 28 are found right here in the Andaman and Nicobar grand total (20 exclusive to the Andaman group alone).
Day 1: Arrival & Coastal Birding at Sippighat
Upon arriving at the airport, our team will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. After a fresh lunch, we head straight out to the Sippighat Wetlands.
This is an exceptional location to log your first major endemic: the Andaman Teal. We will also scan the waters for a host of winter migrants, including the Cotton Teal, Red-throated Pipit, Red-necked Stint, Long-toed Stint, Broad-billed Sandpiper, and Chinese Pond Heron.
After Sunset: We kick off our first specialized night birding trail, focusing our lights and ears on tracking down the magnificent Andaman Masked Owl and Andaman Nightjar.
Day 2: Prime Rainforests of Shoal Bay & Mt. Harriet National Park
Morning Session (Shoal Bay): We depart early into the dense, tropical evergreen forest of Shoal Bay (a scenic 1-hour drive). Here, we quietly watch for the shy Andaman Crake, Andaman Cuckoo-Dove, Andaman Cuckoo-Shrike, Andaman Treepie, Andaman Flowerpecker, and the majestic Black Baza, Ruddy Kingfisher, Mangrove Whistler, and Forest Wagtail. We return to the hotel for a midday lunch and rest.
Afternoon Session (Mt. Harriet National Park): We scale up the forest roads to the summit of Mount Harriet. Walking the quiet summit trails under a towering forest canopy, we make a dedicated push for the rare Andaman Wood Pigeon. Other targets here include the Andaman Serpent Eagle, Andaman Green Pigeon, Long-tailed Parakeet, Violet Cuckoo, Freckle-breasted Woodpecker, Andaman Bulbul, and the beautiful Orange-headed Thrush.
Day 3: Deep Dive into Chidiya Tapu
Today is an immersive, full-day experience at Chidiya Tapu Biological Park, a 40-hectare biodiversity sanctuary rich with ancient Mahua and Padauk trees.
Morning Trails: We wander deep forest roads looking for the Violet Cuckoo, Andaman Serpent Eagle, Andaman Shama, Collared Kingfisher, Pacific Reef Egret, Changeable Hawk-Eagle, Vernal Hanging Parrot, Asian Fairy-Bluebird, Olive-backed Sunbird, and various striking Starlings. Note: Between birding, you can also view captive local wildlife like Andaman wild pigs, barking deer, and saltwater crocodiles.
Afternoon & Coastline Trails: Post-lunch, we shift to completely different coastal and nature trails to catch edge-habitat species like the Dollarbird and specialized shorebirds.
Night Birding Trail: After the sun goes down, we run an intense nocturnal tracking session targeting four spectacular endemic owls: the Andaman Scops-Owl, Andaman Hawk-Owl, Hume’s Hawk-Owl, and the Oriental Scops-Owl (Walden’s).
Day 4: Garacharma, Harbour Shorelines & Ograbranj Wetlands
Morning Session: We start at the Garacharma Wetlands on the outskirts of the city, later tracking back along the harbor coastline to scan the shoreline for Black-naped Terns, Pacific Reef Egrets, Whimbrels, Collared Kingfishers, Pied Imperial Pigeons, and Daurian Starlings.
Afternoon Session: We head out to the vast Ograbranj Wetlands. This is a powerhouse spot for waterbirds. We will look for more endemic Andaman Teal alongside the Stork-billed Kingfisher, Cinnamon Bittern, Yellow Bittern, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint, Long-toed Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Chinese Pond Heron, Western Black-tailed Godwit, and Lesser Whistling Ducks.
Night Session: A final focused night trail to track down any nocturnal target species or owls missed on previous evenings.
Day 5: Dedicated ‘Target-List’ Clean-Up Day
We intentionally reserve this full day to target your “missed species.” Based on what is left on your personal checklist or what species proved elusive earlier in the week, we will customize a dynamic morning and evening route in and around the capital’s best-performing forest patches to clean up your trip list.
Day 6: Departure
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at your hotel. Our team will handle your check-out and drop you directly to the airport for your flight home, wrapping up an unforgettable birding expedition.
